Forgive Me, Darling Daughter

This little poem is based on my mention of my daughter in a joking way to illustrate something to a small group of people I spoke to one time at a church gathering many years ago when she was a pre-teen. I had no idea when I said it that it made her feel bad for me to mention it, but later I found out how much it hurt her. To this day I cannot recall what i had said, only that it surprised me to learn how much it hurt her, and I think this is because I do not embarrass at all as easily as my daughter does. Something to keep in mind if you ever use family as illustrations of anything in a speech!

Forgive me for the thing I said that hurt you.
I found out later how you felt because
you told another; it got back to me.
I hadn’t known how thoughtless that it was.
Though said in jest, it made you feel embarrassed.
It showed my lack of sensitivity.
For how I made you feel, my darling daughter,
please now accept my deep apology.
