Forgetting Words

FORGETTING WORDS

Getting older brings forgetting,
One by one,
My long-known friendly words,
Amassed and loved since childhood.

Against my will, words fly out of my mind’s window.
Trying to recapture them leads only to
Headache and frustration -
They will not be forced back.

But once given up on,
Like escaped birds or love lost,
They will come again.
Delightfully welcome,

Having frolicked for an hour or a week
With the naughty clouds, and scudded
Across the pale-washed sky.
The steady gaze of mother moon
Dipping west in a peaceful swoon,
Returns my errant pals.

Love this. I was looking at my list of poets I follow and was realizing I never hear from you. So I thought I would see your most recent work, and I was not disappointed!
