Damn and Blast

We try not to swear; it isn't nice I have been guilty once or twice Why are some words offensive to say Who decided it would be this way? What was the origin of these foul words That offends the ears when heard. Blasphemy is a mortal sin, What a position to be in, When something or a body upsets me Silence is the remedy, I know this for damn sure, Until I vocalise and tell them more Swear words have a way, In expressing words best not to say Words that seem to have a place When nasty folk get in your face I have rattled on and on. I still haven't learned where these words come from, But it seems to me they have found a place With the bloody human race.

I'm not a swearer but found your poem very amusing! There's still a lesson in there about reacting too quickly :)

I am not a swearer either, DD. I was just curious how they become swearwords. Gershons comment was very helpful. Thank you for your interesting comments. Take care, Shirley

Many years ago I used to go for inspections on the wharf where ships unloaded. Too much swearing that once a swear word of mine escaped me. I never went down there again.

That shows you have good principles, Victor Another thing that is not so evident these days, sadly. I live in Victor Harbour, South Australia. The weather forecast today is expected to be around 40 degrees. I sincerely hope you are having a pleasant day and looking after yourself. Shirley

Gershon, Mr Etymologist, gave a good example below. I wish I had time to look up where others originated from. It amazes me how knowledgeable some people on this site are. You and I think alike. Take care, Deb XX

Well, 'shitte' was used by Chaucer in 'The Canterbury Tales' to mean 'brown.' There's the origin of one of today's 'bad boys.' ~ Mr. Etymologist
