Cold Comfort Zones

       A cold, comfortless park bench
          an empty subway train

A bed of leaves, trending damp
a knoll of grass behind an exit ramp

       Long-abandoned shacks
          or railroad tracks

       Boarded-up homes
          no-trespassing danger zones

All these serenade me to sleep
echo the music, all night I weep

When reading this Gershon I thought of the homeless people and the places they pick to lay, or live. Sad, but a real fact...

Those tracks can stay idle, as far as I'm concerned, at any rate.

Sure you do weep Gershon. These couplets remind me of one of the most populated square miles in the world, Alexandra, which often gets flooded because many people erect their shacks below the flood level of the Jukskei River which bursts its banks and as a result lives lost and homes destroyed. Although I want the rain, I pray so hard the River doesn't burst its banks that night. This town ship is not even 10 kilometers away from one of the wealthiest suburbs in SA, Sandton.

I found this to be quite a moving poem Gershon, The imagery is superb, a fitting backdrop to convey a sense of loss... Intriguing piece that avoids saying too much...invites the reader to think. I like.
