Black Seminoles

Poet: Ken Jordan
Poem: Black Seminoles
Edited by: Sparkle Jordan

I am a black Seminole Indian.
A fierce warrior on the Florida
plains - At war with the
Americas, fighting to hold on
to our land -

I joined forces with the
Seminoles, upon my escape
from the United States, as a
runaway slave -

I am a free black man now,
standing strong, and brave
against the Union, who initiated
three wars against me, and the
Seminoles, to conquer our
place of freedom -

I fought along side Dosar
 Barkus, Cesar Bruner, and
John Horse, all black Seminole
leaders fighting during the
Rebellion -

I stood with Chief warrior
Osceola,a native resistance
leader who fought against
Major General Andrew Jackson,
during the revolt of 1818 -

With our last drop of blood,
we will fight, we will not
concede -Resist we must! until
no man is left standing.  We will
not leave our land, and
surrender to the Union Soldiers

The white man's three wars
against us was tragic, and
when the dust settled, many
souls were lost on both sides of
the war, their were no clear
winners in these senseless
battles, based on the white
man's greed to stage a
takeover of our land -

But in the end, Florida was sold
by the Spaniards, to Major
General Andrew Jackson, who
later became President of the
United States -

Soon, the end was near, white
settlers begin to move in on the
place we called our homeland -

Their disdain  towards us,
forced Major General Andrew
Jackson to transport the last
remaining Seminoles, out of
Florida, to the Oklahoma
territory, to start our
 lives over again -

Our history will never be
forgotten,we stood up against
the Army,Navy,  Marines, and
did not concede -

I am a Black Seminole Indian,
a fierce warrior - My spears left
there mark on the Florida plains
