Becoming An Ex-Smoker
Changing the habit hasn't been easy
Jubilant lip curves to free the breezy
Many trials delivering colossal failure
My efforts to quit robbed of allure
A new courageous attempt is again made
And a new hurting failure of higher grade
A fresh miraculous cut down on the sticks
Yet a dramatic shameful return for more picks
Another beautiful reduction of the ticks
Still a disgraceful hunger for an odour adjudged sick
Then a shaking loose of self from the smoking racket
But all too soon a progression to a shocking one packet
Alas! The devil is prepared for a war with Christ
Though a steady caricature of hearts iced
Many a Christian still his liberal punching bag
And upon his whispered bellows to sag
Rapidly humouring close cigarette ash trays
For the countless dozen times before sun rays
Hence my resolve not to try one more time
To all namable cigarettes releasing my dime
An all-out experimentation of barbaric smoking
Not denied interminable months of suicidal choking
The agonizing recurrence of listlessness
And scandalous twenty two years of breathlessness
Questions about how I'd opened the chapter
And what it does hold for me after
And isn't lord God this watching
But as keenly to not doing so pretending
Then,a sudden assertive will to settle the matter
Start by burning the near tobacco shop of Martha.
