To See Marlena, Part Ii
...Come the next morn Marlena went out to the well to draw some fresh water. She shrieked in terror when she saw Conley, causing her other lover to stir. The man ran out and saw Conley dead, then swiftly jumped up on his horse, as he raced away, Marlena bent low and looked face-to-face at the corpse. She listened for his breath, but heard nothing, and no more did she panic or shriek. Tears filled her eyes for her lost love, and her betrayal made her cry and weep. Forty long years have passed since then, Marlena’s hair is now as white as the snow, Yet to this day she still lives in that hut, forever destined to be there alone. She never took a husband, or another lover, though her beauty had once made heart’s break, she lives in that hut, broken and ruined by the weight of her greatest mistake. A lonely grave stands tall by the home, and she always keeps in tidy and clean, To this day people still hear her mourn and weep for her lost love Conley.
