Home My home was never a house with four walls Or a Mom and Dad with some friends between us all. The more I look, the more I find, That home is entirely a state of mind. My home was never a house with four walls But, a place where I felt vulnerable and small. A place made of ice would have to suffice In hopes of keeping me upright. My home is a fortress built to protect Sure ice is cold, but I find it’s strong when I inspect. The construction began without hesitation But my home’s security required a certain location. Surely a ray of sun would leave me in ruins So I fled the light and gave the darkness my union. I lived there for years blind and stupid, But happy enough to ignore what was quite convoluted. In building my home I forgot one simple thing Without light, deconstruction could prove to be rather trying There was no sunshine to melt the walls And I was forced, day by day, to break away at it all. Now I’m left homeless with no defense Trying to find a strong material that will still easily decondense. To my astonishment the ice wasn’t the problem In fact, it was something I’d almost entirely forgotten. A home is never a house with four walls But where we hide, shine, and live through it all. It’s the place in our minds where we build our defenses But not often without neglect to our other senses. Keelinn Laskaris
