The Song of Alao and Ashake
ASHAKE So many birds have perched and flied off this tree So many leaves have turned green and withered So many seasons have drifted by Since you journeyed over this sea without looking back Alao, Has the beauty on the other side, like bandits Robbed me of the place I hold in your heart? Has the sweat from constant struggling Washed off my spotless spot? Alao Mi, My body has grown so brightly Like a petal that holds the crawls and jiggles spellbound It is glowing Like a moon in the zenith of its reign, Longing for you alone to bask under its fullness Gbo o! Adereti has beat his path down to my doorstep With a gift of queenship to his impending kingship Even Ogungbemi haunts me With a vow of solid meats making my pot dwelling place. Arike has been adorned with a bridal veil And Tinuke straps her fruit in flaunting fashion Alao Mi, My eyes are longing for your presence Be fast and come home to me Jowo ALAO Ashake Mi, Aponbepore Mi Eni okan Mi fe Eni okan Mi yan The beauty that defies the taming power of words Yes, there are beauties here But yours is like a butterfly seated upon the wing of a rose There are struggles here Yet far from it I keep my heart Even when the cold hits me with its stake And the wind greets with its whip Here in me you are intact like the sweetness of the fresh palm wine Ashake, Pay no heed to Adereti and his cunning gift And disregard Ogungbemi For I long for home To lift the bridal veil off your face And bless your womb with the fruit you desire Ibeeji.
