A Splendid Spring Fall Day
Ah, the air - so sweet! Early Spring essences ... Pine cones, lilacs and cherry blossoms, With a wispy and not unpleasant hint of wood smoke, A waft of campfires being carried up the valley, Mixing with a light moisture from Bridal Veil Falls ... On such a magnificent day! Not much wind, per se, But a gentle breeze nonetheless, Created by the natural cone of the valley ... A warm mistral sent north to mix with cooler air. Gloriously clear and deep sky ... No timid hues on such a morn, But rather a deep Nanking Blue, Making a statement to the sun, (Still emerging from behind an evergreen horizon), That it shall not take advantage on such a day! This was a free-climb unlike any other - The Salathe of El Capitan ... A dream come true, and one to cherish, aye! And now, finally, a positive legacy to leave my children! Oh, it makes no matter that I didn't finish - (That a piton lost its stead purchase of the rock), It is the process that truly counts - The courage required to have made the first four pitches, That is something few ever realize! That is what shall be remembered and talked of with regard! I am as satisfied as a human can be, And on a morning as glorious as they come! A man could do far worse ... FAR worse! Blessed, am I, to know such a remarkable day, Immersed in the splendid colors and aromas and sounds of nature, The sandy gray tones of the rock face sliding by, The wind whistling a fond farewell in my ears, And the immaculate crystal heavens dropping away ... As I soar downward ... To my end.
