To Those Who Share My Time
The inevitable irrelevancy of our lives frightens me. All we learn, all we are, all we have hurt… It will end, forgotten. Our generation takes time for granted, and believes itself to be more important than the last. The truth: our generation is no different. Either leave a legacy for the future or fade, buried, unloved in your self-obsession. The world will go on without you. It will not memorialise you for your eyebrows. You are granted one life, one world to experience, one chance to create. Do you spend it thinking you deserve all good things? Will we teach our children they are special and all must be fair? They will carry this to their brood, and so the future becomes obscured by those unwilling to avert their eyes from the mirror to see the beauty of life in all its imperfection. We cannot change that our parents gave us this comforting lie, but this world too, will change, and leave us at its mercy. If you find yourself fortunate, you may only have spent a quarter of your lifespan. Don’t waste the rest on regrets, malice, and yearning for abundant admiration. Don’t cut it short to avoid the risk of pain. Live life, for it is given, and because all will come to dust.
