Advice From a Dream
One night before I slipped away into sleep, I asked myself: "Why do I wake to the life that I keep? When dreams are full of magic, wonder and lore, My own world I can enter through my mind's open door. When I leave, I wake to a world that I see, Full of humanity's horrors and wars, and wicked ennui. Poe once claimed that life is but a dream in a dream, Yet he, like I, woke to a wash of an alcoholic theme. That night as I bound across the bridge of my brain, I met my great Uncle, Tony, whose body no longer remains. Like me he hails from Galway bay, where the Irish are graced, With mystic intuition, yet cursed with the drinking gene of our race. He said "Hiya, Bren" as he saw my glowering frown, "Life is like a garden, there are sown seeds in the ground. You planted them in dreams to grow what you tend, To let each leaf leave you, to see the light, is your end. Now to wake to the world where your dreams become life, Is to conquer the battle against death and end human strife." With his last word I awoke with in mind the words he had spoke, And will now live life like a garden, and let it grow tall as an oak.
