Shadow Eyes
As I walked through the valley of shadows A west wind kicked up leaves all around But the ground had an absence of shadows Moon and stars were obscured by thick clouds I walked slowly, alone in the darkness And my mind was a haven for fear For a soul gets exposed in the darkness In the gloom, ugly secrets laid bare Not from wont of a cordial confession Hailing Mary seemed pointless outside Where the dark spirits order confession Not the glossed over, innocent kind In mid-step, I gave pause for a moment Came a crackle of footsteps nearby And I felt overwrought for a moment When I saw glowing eyes from a fire Not a flame like you'd see in a fireplace But two almonds ablaze in mid air Without heat one would feel near a fireplace Just an icy cold demon ensnared I detected no form in the darkness Not a whisper, a whinny, a roar But the eyes grew forlorn in the darkness And my fear turned to piteous scorn "Get behind me, thy cretinous monster Disembodied and giving me chills No compassion you heathenish monster For those eyes have the power to kill" Then the eyes opened wider than Hades And erupted in sorghum so sweet As the darkness grew brighter than Hades I could feel my corruption complete For I'd journeyed alone in the valley To release my strained conscience from stress I had hoped to atone in the valley And relinquish the worst of myself But my worst was the best for the demon Which empowered his draining me dry And the only part left by the demon Were my mournfully hideous eyes Just two shadowy, piteous eyes
