This Ballot
Never did I see her worrying, sighing, or crying. She was born in 1888; already 61 when I was born. Her country was clearly wearied, wounded, and torn. Her life time was one of poverty and war. Her travels from home never took her that far. But she was here and there for me, always. No, she never learned to read or write. During her lifetime and in my early years, both poll taxes and poll tests were imposed. Such taxes, she could never pay. And such tests, she could never pass. But I saw in her a spirit that never failed. Yes, to my lowly family, grandma was totally devoted. It’s not the only reason, but I do want it to be clearly noted; That I proudly cast this ballot, because of one who never voted. Although, like a slow moving turtle, things gradually changed; it would be a sin and shame if I did not vote, considering her pain. In addition, it’s my right, with nothing to lose, but everything to gain. 06052016 cj P S
