Two Many Feet
Look at my dog -- he has two feet too many! And arms? Well, I tell you, he doesn’t have any! So how does my dog know which foot to put next? I try to guess, but it’s got me perplexed. One, two, three, four - it should be so confusing, And yet he just knows -- it’s very amusing! Perhaps I should tape him, my puppy, my Rover, Then play in slow motion, play over and over. I’d watch very closely, my four-legged friend, To try to measure the start and the end. But that wouldn’t tell me just how he knows Which set to start with - the right or left toes. Right, left, right, left - or left, right, left, right? I could study forever; I could ponder all night, And never explain how he knows what he knows. Perhaps he just knows, and that’s how it goes! See, I have but two feet; it’s never a fight. If I start with the left, or I start with the right, Just which one will follow, or which one comes next, Is always the opposite -- no need to guess! Yes, I’m glad I’m a human, with two arms and feet, And hands and fingers; it’s really quite neat. The things I can do that my puppy just couldn’t, I’d never trade places; oh no, I just wouldn’t. For without two hands and ten little digits My ten finger puppets would be lifeless midgets! I couldn’t ride bikes, or play football, or dress-up. And if I had dog paws I surely would mess up When making a sandwich or pouring my own drink. But what I’d miss most? Oh I shudder to think! What would make me so sad, no it wouldn’t be right, I wouldn’t be able to- Hug you goodnight!!
