The Brightest Star
THE BRIGHTEST STAR Lovingly nurtured them for months Unsightly mound protruding in front Carried the bulk with startling kicks Aware of the other heart that ticks When to this world they were born After the pain of labor has worn Cradled the miracle gifts of wonder Souls entrusted for her to take care She watched her wards like a hawk Seeing them walk, hearing them talk Not even a fly can touch their skins Always certain they’re close within She’s worried sick when they’re ill When they cry, she can’t sit still She taught them right from wrong To face life’s battles and be strong And when at last they have grown Living life the way they have known She keeps an eye over their shoulders Ready to bolt in case they need her And then the sons chose to finally marry She watched them build their own families Allowing them to make their own decisions Jumping in to meddle, only when one groans How can we fault her unconditional devotion? Her overflowing heart filled with love and affection? For the sons and daughter she brought to light Remain children in her heart and mind For when the time to close her eyes has come Her ardent wish is that they be kept away from harm To be able to guide, guard and love them from afar Hush! My babies! Just look at the brightest star!
