Waiting
We would buy the tickets and see the shows We’d laugh at jokes and gasp at the scares But we were only waiting. We’d fill up the tank and hit the roads We’d slow for the bumps and speed for hills But we were still waiting. We would fly across the globe We’d sit beside each other, Hold hands and watch the clouds pass beneath. Even then, we were still waiting. We walked in the wind and the snow Crunched leaves ‘neath our toes, Looking up while walking Not talking, just waiting. Waiting for there to be only one ticket left For the tank to run dry For someone to say “you can’t sit here”, And “the other can sit there.” We were waiting for the wind to blow us apart And the snow to keep it that way. We’d never let go on our own It was never the wrong time for play. But like two elk with antlers entwined We’d both die if we didn’t unwind The messed up knot we’ve only made tighter With word after word from typewriters. Neither of us were able to stand the blame Of being the one to forfeit the game. We wanted fate to intervene And with its icy hand unseen To let us go our separate ways And to not look back at one another With a hollow cold regretful gaze But instead with love still lingering And both our hearts still tingling Give one last kiss and say goodbyes Not to who was leaving But to who we were When we caught each other’s eyes.
