Those Dreams
Let’s scale heights Let’s leap over buildings Let’s skid over roof tiles Let’s stay out of sight Wear masks, a cape Carry weapons of our choice Let’s pretend to be kings Wear a crown of paper Assume we are the entitled Wave sticks instead of swords Let’s be poor imitations I remember that time We could be anything Never questioned Let’s put our heads to the grind Trying to find answers to questions We are seekers, curious No shred of hesitance To debate, we have opinions Let’s follow, let’s set aims Set our sights So we know where to start And where to reach We have been told What we need to be I remember that time When our decisions were stolen We never questioned Let’s work Make ends meet Follow a trodden path For we just need to live To work again A cycle repeated Let’s pass on some traditions To future generations See them draw in the sand Their dreams That we will thwart As they play with sticks Wear capes and masks We will know what must be done For dreams are dangerous They make a person believe Hurt us, break us, haunt us We won’t explain to them Why must it be this way For we have no reason We will order that their compasses Must change direction We will allow them a plethora of options All the freedom But will bend them into that shape Which we feel familiar I remember that time When dreams were but a dream We didn’t question, will they?
