The Money Game
THE MONEY GAME What gifts are daily gold and gains? What finite pleasures crowd upward ways, What foolish man should claw each day To gather more to tuck away? Look closely at this useless strife How curiously this mind is bent-- See if each bit safely piled away Is worth the trouble that is spent. Is pride your hungry heart’s desire? Does power’s mountain call your name? Does love of fame set you on fire-- Accumulation your best game? Power, pride and love crave more But all these-- time shall just destroy And if the money disappears-- Like sand love purchased has no joy. Do you think pride buys true respect And brings regard in neighbor’s eyes Adeptly hides your fool-bent faults-- A wise man surely will despise? Success will make you strut and preen Like a walking willful weather vane Leave you a shadow of yourself-- And no one truly knows your name. February 8, 2014 V Anderson-Throop
