The Martyr
The Martyr By Kevin Robey August 23, 2013 She wiggled her toes between the sand Clenching her fingers into her hands Paralyzed and confused as she watches on The flames dancing to this horrible song His skin is on fire, but his eyes are like stone Relenting to the grips of the great unknown His addiction is pain but it’s all just the same Demons run the course of this runaway train She wants to scream and throw sand in his face Bring sense to this man whose mind laid to waste It’s killing him now, but he is blind to the sound Of ashes slowing down as they fall to the ground Soon his heart will stop like a dying flame It’s in his mind where he assigns the blame Anger fills his eyes until forgets his own name Ominous signs foreshadow impending shame Approaching the horizon he’s walking alone To put out the fire or stand here like stone Looking into the girl with the dragon tattoo He takes a deep breath and reaches for truth So that’s what he does, puts out the flames Takes a step forward with a thought to retain That first kiss and a bond he almost missed Worth every stride through his inner abyss Stepping out of the hole and into the light Waking from the dream with new reasons to fight She looks at him again and the fire is gone Together they turn forward and face a new dawn
