The Prayer
I, emptied vessel, denying needs, am filled Then poured out again From trembling lips fearful of new vacancy And fearful to hear What I shall see and become. Not this, not this, the presence in your presence posed But what I am since eternity What always I was, and still remain to be The perfect image of perfect trinity In mass-less singularity. I speak them all Not like things to come But the unveiling of yesterday In today's eternity. Let me breathe For you, and you, and you What was poured into me And for things promised The vision that complete love's holiness The sum of every beginning In the single end. Let me breathe this wholeness Like a saga told of what is to come My own life a butterfly Reconquering the cocoon. Prayer is only a beating heart Becoming words In the reflection of water, In the straightening of light. Pray that the sun Will not drink the pond dry And the clouds will not blind the ray And that my heart may be a door To the temple of my soul. Pray that we be one Strain of melody tolling glory.
