For May
May, sensuous and fresh, I wait For you to come down the rock gate Eyes sunlit and dreaming Bosom flowered with charm of late While boyhood confused hesitate For your abrupt leaving I have longed since then to behold Long legged like strings of Maypole Your eager returning But earth wanders through forests cold Where loneliness is not more gold And spring set us yearning For fruits more than flowers to bring To the tongues joy ravished kissing All winter long we missed Apart like rivers, entering Different seas, and sojourning In salty, ageing mist. O May, please come again to me Where children frolic swells the sea And love's mad lightning brings The rain naked to naked earth And birds exult in rapture's mirth And bees aloft still sings I should have loved you ever then And kept summer for winter's when The wrinkled clouds turned grey I should have kissed your gift, my friend O innocent the time we spend Carving clouds in May. Married to your summers and song One month brief, while desire is long The open blouse and eyes The mountain blue, and wind so strong Lifts my mind to kite scenes: the gang Staring at you surprised.
