Birth of a Poem
Mocking me with added pressure I see your annoying blinking gesture The line that waits to lead my thoughts Tumbled freshly-born squirming tots Like any infant much care you take Grooming and pampering till presentable you make Shrieking loneliness at darkest night Now sleeping soundly at first light Pretentious little wretch you are Staring and taunting from afar Just out of reach and running hard To contain you is to cage a star But as you grow and let me nurture You may yet have a stable future I know you well and my gaze is harsh and harried See, I fear your failing for within you I am carried My cursor leads the frantic heard Snapping and whipping at every word Till you are in your proper place And I can finally see your face Careful inspection of every inch Revisions, edit, poke, prod, and pinch You’re ready now – don’t keep them waiting Go with my blessing, no more contemplating Now to wait the critic’s wrath Walking down an unknown path Lost forever will you be? Or lifted into an effigy Of me? Fear not my child, my love, my art Your were conceived within my heart And that will be your refuge still Regardless of the world’s will.
