Nostalgia
O how I wish that then was now When horses pulled the farmers plough When steam propelled the midnight train I’ll never see those times again The hedgerows full of singing birds Wild flowers among the herds A quiet stroll in a country lane Without the sounds of car or plane August passed the harvest done You walk the stubble with dog and gun Go fishing in an old mill pool Where the kingfisher gleams like a precious jewel An evening spent in a cosy inn Devoid of any juke-box din You sup your ale and smoke your briar Warming your hands by a real log fire Alas no more this peaceful land Defiled by buildings concrete hand Life once lived at a slower pace Has now become a manic race Everyone it seems wants more A new PC or a four by four Each struggling to meet the cost Possessions gained, contentment lost O how I wish that then was now When horses pulled the farmers plough These images still haunt my brain I’ll never see those times again
