A Memory
As I lie awake, another sleepless night, I find my mind drifting, towards you once again, Without your presence near, darkness falls upon me, Four month’s it’s been, a nightly ritual unceasing. After hours watching the ceiling, as it moves, Forming waves and breakers upon the shores of my mind, I find your beautiful face, staring down, watching, Wondering why I’m not there, where I should be. And I futilely try to reach you, never close enough, Never soon enough, simply never enough, in my mind. And as the night progresses on, forever endless, I feel the caress of your fingers once again. They trace atop my fingers, and gently sweep across my face, Revealing behind them that which no one else sees, My face beneath this mask I wear, my wall, my defense, My disguise that has fooled everyone, but you. Your fingers strip away the outer shell, and innocently reach within, Armor gone, emotions unveiled, my secrets known to you, And still you reach deeper, pulling at my heartstrings now, Within my mind, across the distance between us, you and I. As I lie awake, another sleepless, endless night, I find you again, and we dance as we once did, I hold you once more, laugh and sing to you again, But it’s never the same, so I wait, and lie awake, remembering.
