Homeless Hopeful
Don't wake me as you're passing 'Cause you'll interrupt my scheme I may look like I'm sleeping But I'm living out a dream I chose this place to linger It's my favorite resting spot It lies between the bakery And the mission with the cots I close my eyes and drift away To memories of the past I savor recollection But the feeling doesn't last The smell of mamas cooking Has to give way to the cold I turn my back against the chill With the blanket that I hold I doze in Autumn slumber As a gray sky hangs above The smell of bread and pastries Fill my nostrils with their love Again I'm back to other days Where I remember when I'd walk down to the fishing hole And maybe jump right in I'd lay back in a field of grass And watch the clouds go by One looks like a pony As it races 'cross the sky Suddenly a city bus Goes rumbling past my ear It scares me and I sit up On the bench that I endear I rub my eyes and look around I see the fading light It's time to head down to the place That keeps me safe at night The shelter gives me comfort And they see that I am fed They give me bed and blanket With a pillow for my head I take their generosity And find a place to lay I place my things upon the cot Then bow my head to pray "Lord don't let this be my life I've had so much before I beg you, let me be redeemed I know you're at the door" That being said, I go to bed To carry out my scheme Don't wake me as you're passing 'Cause you'll interrupt my dream Rockman
