The Mask
Amazing how something in one's eyes Could appear so different in another's Where you see pain, loneliness, and heartache I see comfort, companionship, and peace You think you know Do you?!? No! You will never understand This seething rage I hide just below the surface... Wake up every morning, force myself out of bed When I already know what to expect I finish getting ready. Ah! Ive almost forgotten the most important part -my mask. You see, what you think you understand is nothing more Than a thin, wavering mask, covering What is just beneath the skin If only someone would take the time To care and to talk Then maybe, just maybe The mask would be taken Slowly, but eventually And maybe I could come out of this pit But instead, I trudge through the day Vision averted Scarcely making contact with another Home at last I've waited all day for this Collapse on the bed And wait Oh the waiting For that moment when I can finally Slip into the blackness Knowing that when I awake I'll confront the same thing once more But for now I let the dark envelop me All this because no one asked What you saw as a "weird" or "creepy" kid Was really nothing more Than someone who's hurt inside But your slights and degradations continue Hah! I laugh your hate away Even though you don't realize How deep the knife of your words Is cutting So maybe.. Next time, Before you open your mouth Maybe, you should think about Who's really hiding Underneath the mask your talking to
