For a Rambling Poet
The small, quiet, cozy house, inhabitants are settling to get ready for slumber, when their red short legged puppy began to bark loudly out of control. The puppy's bristled nape and stiff legs claw madly at the locked door. Sensitive olfactory alerter of an intruder on the ranch style porch. Fear, nerves, chills run through the family; what lies on the other side of the dark door? Should investigation start? Is it safe? Courage allows the door to open and a proper investigation of the scene to begin. Eyes adjust to the darkness and a panoramic scan begins; as brain realizes every item is in its usual spot the red puppy sniffs around the porch then yard and begins a frenzied display behind the rocker. Brave parents find a hairy...viscious...teeth bared... long hairless tailed opussum! Grinning opussum, thankful for a good meal of cat food in his belly, on this cold winter's night.
