Hole-Filled Boy
after The Jumblies, by Edward Lear I I was just a boy of eight, I was, when I first heard your words. What would set my mind to play? - an animated cartoon on Saturday! When I first heard your words, to cartoon accompaniment, my mind went where the Jumblies went. More than a laugh, it gave me a thrill to know colorful creatures immune to a spill, when I first heard your words. Though and though, and so and so, I am only a hole-filled boy, Hear ye, hear ye, from this day forth, nobody can take my joy. II These words found a comfy place to sleep somewhere inside my head. I grew up, and ate jelly rolls, but it was obvious there were holes somewhere inside my head. Everyone cried, "your life don't make sense. You must make airtight arguments. A boy with holes will always fail", but I said, "donuts have them, they must prevail". Yup, that's exactly what I said. Though and though, and so and so, I am only a hole-filled boy, Hear ye, hear ye, from this day forth, nobody can steal my joy. III  Thirty years later, I browsed books for my kid, and my God, those words woke up! They were written by you, called Edward Lear, and my memory kicked into gear - how you cheered me up. Now, I'm old and pretty much done, but no one will ever take my fun. Soon, I'll join millions of souls. Look for me, Mr. Lear, the boy with holes. A toast to you, and yup - Though and though, and so and so, I am only a hole-filled boy, Hear ye, hear ye, from this day forth, nobody can take my joy.
