A Bell and a Kettle'
I saw him standing outside the store, Waiting as folks came out the door. A small brass bell was held in his hand, And a little red kettle beside him did stand. Ding, dong, ding, dong, ding. For over and hour that bell would constantly ring. That day the wind was very strong, And snow would fly before long. "Why do you stay out here in this cold?" This was the story that the volunteer told; "I've been doing this for the past six years," He told me-trying to hold back the tears. "I used to stand in front of another store, But this year they said they didn't want us anymore. We bell-ringers come from all walks of life, Why, I just relieved a husband and wife. Some volunteer with a group from work; Many of those simply think of this as one of their "perks." Eight years ago, I was down on my luck, Been laid off, and my son was hit by a truck. Medical bills mounting with no way to pay, So I turned for help to the folks at S.A.. They were kind and loving right from the start. What they did for my family touched me right in my heart. They had true love and a great, positive attitude, So I stand here each year to show my gratitude. Freely I've received, so now freely I give. And I'm convinced this is how we should all live." Well I dug out some bills and dropped them in. "Have a Blessed Merry Christmas," he said with a grin. Arthur Ball (H.S.L.P.) December 11, 2005
