YESTERDAY’S SONG
[Verse 1] She came to me like a late-night spark, Whispered words in the quiet dark. Didn’t know her name, but I felt the pull— My hands went numb, my heart got full. Line by line, she lit my soul, The kind of fire you don’t control. Thought she’d stay, thought she was mine— Didn’t see the ending, not that time. [Chorus] I loved her like my only song, Felt like she’d been there all along. Every chord and twist and rhyme— Yeah, I swore I’d hold her for all time. But she faded like the final note, Slipped away while I still wrote. Now she’s a verse I used to know— She’s yesterday’s song… and I let her go. [Verse 2] She danced around like a dream half-true, And man, I gave her all I knew. Wasn’t chasing hits or fame that day— Just wanted her in every way. Felt her heartbeat in the bridge and hook, Got lost inside the life she took. Played her back a thousand times, Still couldn’t hold what wasn’t mine. [Bridge] Wasn’t lookin’ when she came to me, But she wrote me like a melody. I bled my fingers down to bone, Felt more alive than I’d ever known. Still love her, yeah, I always will— But I’ve got this ache I need to fill. I’m not chasin’ gold or some charting goal— Just chasin’ what tomorrow holds. [Final Chorus] I loved her like my only song, She made me feel like I belonged. I played her proud, I played her true— Now she’s a tune I’m walkin’ through. She’ll always be a part of me, But I’ve moved on, musically. She’s yesterday’s song I still hum slow… And yeah, I loved her—then let her go. The unquenchable love for a muse is intense.. until it isn’t. Much as it is in human relationships. Thus the importance of constantly evolving as a person.. and stay somewhat mysterious! Note: Grateful for an 8th place finish in the Your Choice P Contest.
