Not Your Valentine
I told him I’m not sure I want to marry He threw a tantrum like a child Why are black women like this he asked But the reasons are as deep as the Nile You played and played away your youth Had women like a litter of cocoa kittens Then you near fifty and see the truth You’re alone and need maid for kitchen You had women who wanted you young To grow old and hold then procreate Now you’ve wasted your souls fools gold You wish to marry before it’s too late Perhaps I have not included true love I wonder if this still is your m.o. But you haven’t said or showed enough To make me think that it is so When I was young I made my bed As a single mom I had to lay in it Time went on as my days like red Roses with thorns skin sun kissed I think I never met my mate so Sorry if that you don’t understand I really am rather content to know There’s a God who will hold my hand You are here and I am there We really aren’t on the same page Even if you came here dear I’d only have to say to your face That poetry is my constant companion From youth until my mature years I don’t think you could mahogany manage The depth of my years fears tears I have tried to be a friend to you Perhaps more in my emerald mind But it seems you ignored the truth I am not yours to find valentine
