Goodnight Dad
Goodnight Dad I was sitting in the backyard earlier, just gazing at the stars. The sky was clear, and the moon was still asleep somewhere back east. My mind, as it usually does, started to drift back through time to those nights of hunting with my father and brothers. On some of those nights, when the dogs were still trying to figure out what scent impressed them most, there would be a small lull in the action. That was perhaps my favorite time of the entire hunt. We would lean back against a tree or find a nice log to sit on and dad would teach us everything he knew about the night sky. He pointed out the big dipper, little dipper, the north star, and the seven sisters and how to use them to navigate our way home if we were to get off track. My father passed away many years ago, but his words still ring in my ears today. As I sat there, I realize that the stars I was staring at tonight are the exact same ones we were looking at on those nights so long ago. Except for that one little star way over by the horizon, right next to that little blue one. I don’t remember that star being there before. It reminds me of the twinkle in my father’s eyes when he smiled. A single moment can survive eternity through fond memories
