Divorce
Doesn't seem like that long ago, when I was first introduced to divorce. My parents decided that they weren't in love any more and were "still very good friends", but they didn't want to live together. I was about seven then, so it was about six years ago. In the grand scheme of things, 6 years isn't very long, but for me, it's almost half of my life! Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving were suddenly doubled, although we still do "family holidays". Of course, I miss when they were together, but frankly, I don't remember it that well. I was so young, that there isn't really a before or after, there's just what is. Really, I don't remember feeling much sadness around the word divorce, because I didn't know the definition. Now I do, but I think the definition is different for everyone. Clearly they had a "happy divorce" because I still see both of my parents most days. We're much luckier than some families. Even now, after both of my parents have entered new relationships, I get little snapshots of climbing into bed. Their bed. That they shared. I've moved on, and learned not to dwell on it, and I hope all kids and their families will learn to do the same.
