Mayfly
Mayfly ——————————————————————— A mayfly landed on my arm today, It investigated the old scars that cover me And asked “for what reason?”. I was unsure how to reply, So I just stared longingly at the bug. “The heavens have abandoned me, I am alone in this world And I have no more reason to be here” I reply. “If the heavens have abandoned you Then why do you care? They are no longer there, They no longer exist, But you do” Says the mayfly. “I am a cast away creation, A life span of only a day, Yet I am happy with this fact. I experience it all faster that you, I grow old faster, I die faster, And I do not fear it. I have travelled my small world And I have discovered no heaven and no hell, There is only us. Live, you have longer, so be happy for longer. Notice every detail in the tree’s, The rising sun, The shining moon. Watch people fall in love, And feel the pain of the absence of it Directed at you, But feel happy that it is still there And that there is hope. Never drink the fountain of youth, Grow old, watch those you love die, And appreciate everything. The heavens have abandoned you, So turn your back on them And form a pantheon of your own volition. Live, and do not turn back child. Live.” Upon speaking these last few words, The mayfly drops dead on my arm, A waste of a life, given to me. Oh but I shall live, A task I may wish to throw away, But a task I shall learn to love. “Cast away the heavens dear child.”
