Bus Thoughts
I’m on a bus, Not beside the window, I’ve seen too much happen, To Kenyan passengers seated by the window, I feel safe, secure. I’m out of the club About to pass out But I have money to uber my way home I can get to safety, I’m sure I pass by an absurd line, For job applications, In a new mall, I am safe, because I’m not on it. After bitterly complaining, Of the corruption in the country, We laugh over Atwoli’s memes Hoping that amidst all this tragedy, There is something worthy. My friend shows me, How to pirate media, I listen to soothing Kenyan music, And feel secure, In the ingenuity I live among. I am tall, dark skin and dreadlocked, I feel secure, Not because I roll with criminals, But because I am perceived as one. I am a lady, Covered up in hoodies, Wearing ugly flip flops, I am unattractive enough, To be invisible to the predators I feel safe. My brother feels safe, Saying women have to regulate their dressing, Because he knows, He will never have to adhere to such rules. I am home, I feel safe coming to parents, Who accept me and support me while I school, Because I know if it weren't for my grades, That wouldn’t be the case.
