Mary Contrary's Obituary
Between the covers of a well-worn book, Hidden away in a private, personal library Was the old obituary from long, long ago Of an elderly woman named Mary Contrary. I found it one day quite by sheer accident While I was blithely rummaging to and fro, And I learned that Mary was a real person Who did enjoy watching her garden grow. She decorated it with cockleshells and flags All her neighbors were enthralled by that, And while reading her rather brief obituary I wondered where ol’ Mary Contrary was at. A woman of considerable well-earned fame Never entirely forgotten because of a rhyme, I recall reciting a nursery poem about her Long ago in school, t’was a very long time. She must’ve hung on with considerable grit, Year after year until that October day in fall When her flowers all dried up and blew away, Mary Contrary gave up the ghost on a chilly day.
