I was led to a table and got my first fright. For barely a few inches away was another table, An elderly couple sat there, Gloomy faced and silent. My date arrived, late. She sat down as if she knew the place. She smiled but no introductions. Just said: Do you like dogs? I wish to buy a poodle! I have a Doberman at home, I said, A bit vicious but under control. Obviously the chemistry between us Was not at full pitch. How dare you buy such an animal? That came from the table near. The old woman was listening it seemed. I thought I’d be rude, but held my tongue. The menu arrived. She chose steak. Lord I thought, that would be expensive. Want some wine? Or champagne? The lady had her tastes. If you can’t afford it, I’ll pay myself. That was the old man interfering. But the surprise was soon evident For my date just said: Father leave things to me. And then realized her mistake. My excuse was to go to the toilet, But ran fast out of there. The head waiter laughed and said. That’s the fourth one this month!
