The Pond
Glistening like a mirror The turbulent waters stilled Reflecting insects skittering The call of a whippoorwill Subtle riffles across the pond Caused by a summer breeze, A magical movement close to the edge Caused me to stop and freeze For their approached a lovely sight Brown fur a glistening in the light Her brown eyes shining brightly As she looked both left then right With caution she approached the pond She dipped her head to drink I dare not move lest she sees me And be gone within a blink Nervously she turned her head Looked back from whence she came A pair of spotted little ones Had followed her again She turned to look directly at Those two adorable deer When a noise back in the underbrush Caused large antlers to appear And then the muscled body Of their Daddy did appear Like two disobedient children They fled back towards the rear The doe stepped boldly close to him Put her nose up near his face Then softly nuzzled along his cheek In a sweet romantic embrace Another crack of a broken limb Caused chaos near the pond Both deer reeled a running And like lightening they were gone I'm often back standing near that pond With hopes I'll luckily see The buck, the doe and grown-up fawns The magnificent deer family
