Autumn As Pictures, Sounds and Fragrance
Autumn As Pictures, Sounds and Fragrance Scenery either seen before, Or only imagined in your mind, Or felt in your heart, Or heard without sound. Sound and sight, Aroma and feel, All captured by words written in Dreams and memories. The sound of fallen down autumn colored leaves As you push and then drag your footsteps through them Listening to their “scrunch”. The fragrant odor of leaves Raked into piles in the yard and lighted by match In the early darkening of evening as the cold nips at your fingertips. The feel and crackle of corn stalks as you walk, A fence row taller than you, As they scrape the mackinaw red and black wool plaid coat. The feel of soft wind as you lay Under the maples, enwrapped in their red finery, Looking out at the yellow overcoats of larch As they march like a field of toy soldiers up the mountains to the snowy peaks. The bubbling laughter of brook Transporting its covering of fallen leaves which swirl and dance in the rapids Of a river which has run through it. The owl sound, distant but close, Unearthly coming to you As you walk in the cold, underneath the clear sky With its ornament of full moon. Words as pictures. Words as autumn. Scenery either seen before, Or only imagined in your mind, Or felt in your heart and soul. David Holmes 10/21/2020
