Love Eternal
She never left her window, sometimes for days on end. Never seemed to have visitors, relative or friend. Always looking pensive, her grey hair in a bun. Throughout the snows of winter, or days of summer sun. Always neat and tidy, as if in her Sunday best. Always looking down the street, eyes furtive, never at rest. Her shopping was delivered, she didn't go out anymore. Neighbours had stopped calling, or knocking on her door. And so it was for year on year, 'til the day she wasn't there. The postman first to notice, the empty rocking chair. They found her in her crisp, linen bed, best nightie, hair in place. A touch of make up, eyes closed shut, a smile upon her face. And in her hand a photograph, a soldier, a Kings dragoon. And on the back in faded script, 'Look for me, I'll be home soon'.
