Maudlin Memories
The weakened gate on the south side of the yard Swings and squeaks with every breeze that blows Calling me to mend it, to repair the broken hinge However, it is that call that brings back memories It was a younger us, passing through that very gate I held it open for you and just then, it had broken You looked at me with that smile that lit up rooms I couldn’t help but smile myself, saying, “I’ll get to that” You greeted my parents for the very first time that day They, too, were captivated by your smile and charm As they welcomed the future Mrs. Me into the family Alive we were then, young hearts filled with dreams We were passionate, about life and about each other Time has passed my dear, here are flowers for you I’ve mowed the grass that was blocking your name I know it seems a lifetime ago, but it was yesterday And it will be short, my dear, until I see you again I no longer weep upon your memory, but rejoice I knew of no love like ours, as it was created in the skies Look upon me my love, pray I am with you soon The weakened gate on the south side of the yard Swings and squeaks with every breeze that blows Calling me to mend it, to repair the broken hinge However, it is that call that brings back happiness
