The Eyes of Sadness
The Eyes of Sadness Have you ever seen the eyes of sadness, And felt them stab your brain? They fill your soul with loneliness, And agony, and pain. I saw those eyes some time ago, And their memory haunts me still; I can't forget their emptiness, And I guess I never will. They make you wonder how they came To be in that empty shell Of that man who once had a spark of life, But now who lives in Hell. I wanted to ask what it had been That brought him to this way, But I held back my words, and prayed that he Would see a better day. Perhaps it had been the loss of health; But alas, he was in appearance fit; Perhaps it had been his money he'd lost, But no, that just couldn't be it. What type of loss can strip a man Of all that he holds dear; That steals the pride that once was his, And replaces it with fear? And then it hit me, I knew at once What all that sadness had cost; It just could not have been anything else, The love of his life he'd lost. A man can bear most anything, And still some happiness find; But when he loses the love of his life, He also loses his mind. He no longer has a will to live, He is filled with unbearable grief, And he prays each day as a new dawn breaks That the rest of his life will be brief. I knew those eyes, those sad, sad eyes, That long, from this world, to be free. They torment my soul each and every day, For they're there in the mirror, looking at me.
