Going After Gold
GOING AFTER GOLD A hundred years ago or so, the story has been told, A fever swept across the land of going after gold. It seemed each person caught the urge, and they just could not rest, The cry came through the camps and towns, “Go west, young man, go west!” The speculators grabbed their things and rolled the wagons on Through plains and deserts, wind and storms, so many folks were gone. I’m sure there were some battles then for just the proper place; The fevered pitch had held their hearts in such a frantic pace. And even yet today, it seems, there are those brave and bold Who boast of value they receive for going after gold. “It’s guaranteed to be,” they say, “investment so secure, So buy a coin or wedge today, it’s worth it, I am sure.” I never had the chance to go out west so long ago, And I don’t have portfolios of gold, and yet I know I once was on a search for gold, a different kind, you’d say, It took my heart away from God and in sin I did stray. I followed in a path oft trod by men both young and old Only to find, like some back then, I had found fool’s gold! And so distressed was I until I heard a loving voice Say, “Come to Me and trust My Son and make My love your choice!” It was the voice of God above, and as His love He told, I realized that it was worth much more than earthly gold. I trusted in His Son one day, received His wondrous grace As all my sin and awful shame He that day did erase. And now I have a greater yearn, because I have been told He’s taking me some day real soon to mansions made of gold! So why now should I search on earth and never find my rest, Go north or south--it is not there, nor is it east or west. The only gold I’m going for is that which never fades, Where moth and rust cannot corrupt and thieves can never raid. Now how about you, my dear friend? Now that my story’s told, Do you know Jesus as your Lord; will you walk streets of gold? It just takes simple faith in Him, your search then will be o’er; And you will join so many more on heaven’s golden shore!
