Royal Wedding of the Owls
King of this barn I am said the owl, and he said it in one loud caw. The other animals began leaving, for they were afraid of the king. I watched them scatter, as if they had read a proclamation law. The mice formed a fountain, running in every direction, a funny zing. I will refurbish this place, change it into a glorious nest, the king said. I watched him do it in ways that were wonderful to surmise. I am getting ready for my queen, he told me. Here is our straw bed. His queen arrived in a snow storm, a wonderful dainty surprise. Queen of the North Wind Owls, she had her own crown, and a regal air. The animals watched her approach the barn, and were frankly smitten. King of the Barn was ready for his lady. Wedding feast was fine and fair. They needed a mutual agreement said preacher cat grown from kitten. The wedding of the century, raccoons said, from their perches in trees. Are we invited? Skunks laughed and assured me owls could come. A private wedding, only owls, mice said. It will be in the winter breeze. The owls lived and reigned many years together, happier than some. When I saw you, the King said. Knew you were the one; my lovely bride. She was excited and thrilled that after all these years he felt this way. The ground animals continued to slip in and out, around the barn. Sneaking because they knew they would be eaten if found in the hay.
