The Toad Mistaken
Two toads appear in a lonely wood One may be bad, the other may be good Each claimed their route to be the best They challenged me to take their test Enchanted forest myths pose questions So often paths part in two directions Did not think of other tracks to take Whoever knew all that was at stake Yet both said things that I believed I could not tell if one deceived Those toads spoke in two different voices While espousing each of these trail choices Go through the timber to then begin To see your future, look deep within Walk in the weald so you now will know And plead to the fates that they should show The first toad pointed left to the light The other sent me over to the right I pondered, then went inbetween Not musing about what might have been Some seek a certainty on the plain Fears of dense dappled darkness remain The inner light will guide you along It will help you find where you belong One must follow the light from inside From yourself, there's no place to hide Any path will reward a true brave heart Those ruled by fear fail, never start 10/31/19 written Couplet In part celebration and parody of humankind's tumult in life decision making. A part parody of Robert Frost's iconic sonnet, The Road Not Taken, honoring its focus on decision making. Using illusion, myth and introspection against a backdrop of the woods, trees being one of our oldest friends on earth - we inspect how we think about and judge our life decisions.
