Tribute to “The Tenement” Documentary All I know is fix’ n Sweep’n and mopp’n Wash’n And dust’n I reckon, I’m the only one doing work around here I must raise ‘m up right Even in this South side of Chicago slum Late afternoon children play house Others wheel tires down the sidewalk Daddy’s ears are good for trouble Mama ain’t have’n’ it Say grace Make everything alright Mama is all we’ve got Never be ashamed to come to mama With your aching heart Momma ain’t scared of noth’n’ , now Aint noth’n she don’t know ‘bout But she’d rather die than let you run wild Mama want us to keep our minds occupied The tv is our entertainment Our getaway from our lives Sit at the front porch See what neighbors ‘bout Routine and pattern bore them out Radios and record players blazing late at night People hoot’n and hollerin’ However they like I’m on my bed twist’n and turn’n Can’t sleep with the noise I came here to do better The TV world is a fantasy world Better off in rural south I live in a Chicago slum Children go to school with empty stomachs and dry mouths Government help us chil’ren and mamas out When the men are no where to be found I’ve got hopes I’ll move along God, let your will be done Marckincia Jean Narrative 09/24/19
