Florida Rain Part 1
Florida Rain Part 1 Robby is sitting in my room on a chair one early evening reminiscing about her thirteen years in Florida. “In Florida, we don’t ring bells, we knock. But there’s a limit to how many times you can knock because every house I know has a window directly on the door or next to it. If you knock three or more times, they get annoyed…scared…and don’t even open the door. If you knock a fourth time, they open the window curtain and you stare at them until they leave,” Robby laughs. “It’s like a sloth neighborhood. We’re so trusting to everyone that it is a hazard to us. “ rains every night. It’s so beautiful.” In the morning she says “You wake up and put out your lawn chair under the big tree every Floridian has in the middle of their backyard, it’s sacred to tradition.” She says that there are “raindrops all over the grass, so relaxing , you would wish you could shrink down to smell it… a barn…organic, like nature’s rainforest. Everything dies in the middle of the day” attracting roaches, flies, mosquitoes and mice that can go in your mouth or in your ears.” “The night’s rain scares away insects and rodents, leaving Floridians to scale and clean their fish alone. Floridians have mango and avocado trees decorating the ground. Robby’s mother has told her to run and grab some off of her neighbor’s yard. Marckincia Jean Narrative 06/25/19
