My Friend the Sea
Seated on black rocks – a mermaid, a siren, waiting for my sailor prince to come. Liquid aquamarine laps my ankles, frothy champagne bubbles burst on toes. This is my happy place! I belong here with waves and sky and sun! Towering cliffs rise above me, majestic, immovable strength. Impenetrable wall of resistance to the tides’ buffeting force. How I wish that I could swim, submerge in the salty coolness, meet the breakers’ rise and fall let them float me to the shore. Sky like a field of cornflowers holds the golden orb beaming down its warming power and strength, competing with the tidal roar. Sounds like tinkling broken glass, rhythmic rushing of waves to shore, powerful percussion, masterful, mighty, yet as soothing as a lullaby. Yesterday these tides were angry, battering everything in their path, wild horses rearing, spewing foam crashing furiously on the stone. Today the waves are calm, caressing, sun, sea and sky in perfect peace. Stripes of indigo, azure, turquoise, sapphires sparkling in the sun. My friend the sea, soothes my limbs as well as my soul, knowing my need to be close, my world in perfect harmony. Ruth Mawdsley May 2019
