Children's Matinee
Children's Matinee. For us kids off the common streets Every weekend we had a special treat Held at the old community centre On Monksbridge Was the children's matinee Just a stones throw away Where we enjoyed the films Projected upon the screen Armed with bottles of pop And spice to scoff Bought from the local shops We’d sit there eyes as big as dinner plates With our elders To watch the show And couldn’t wait With the lights turned off And the music played We travelled on adventures Faraway Tarzan Lord of the jungle Was a favourite of mine I must have watched dozens of times I loved cowboy and Indians But the cowboy almost almost won Fighting bows and arrows with guns George Formby and Will Hay Used to make us laugh all day ‘’Turned out nice again’’ After the show We would go Home to dinner And talk about what we’d seen On the silver screen Then we’d knock on our mates doors ‘’Is your so and so playing’’ And the fun would begin We’d act out the scenes We’d seen at the matinee Imaging we were Geronimo Tarzan Erol Flynn and Flash Gordon To ease our boredom And make our childhood sweet Out playing upon the street.
